Understanding Curriculum Related Expectations at Brownedge
At Brownedge, our teaching and assessment in years 7-9 are guided by Curriculum Related Expectations (CREs), ensuring your child develops the essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Below, we outline key elements of our curriculum and assessment process to help you understand how we support your child’s learning and progress.
NEED Knowledge:
-
- This refers to the non-negotiable, essential knowledge and skills your child must master to progress.
- Examples include foundational skills like times tables in maths or grammar rules in English.
- Mastery of this knowledge ensures your child is making progress, long-term retention and readiness for future learning.
- The final component in each topic allows students to excel by demonstrating knowledge and skills beyond the core NEED knowledge and shows they are excelling in the curriculum.
Formal knowledge checks
- Knowledge checks take place after 10 hours of teaching
- The assess your child's mastery of the NEED knowledge in each subject
- Feedback identifies strenghths and areas for improvement without grades or percentages
Progress on your child’s review
The progress descriptor on your child’s review is based on their most recent knowledge check in each subject. You can see the need knowledge assessed in the relevant box on their review. We use 4 descriptors to report progress to you.
