‘For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.’ - Romans, 15:4

Our Vision and Intent

The study of history at Brownedge St. Mary’s enables our pupils to place their own identity in an ever-changing world, through an understanding of their heritage, culture and society and their impact on the wider world. We believe the purpose of studying history is to engage our pupils in their world; to deepen aspirations to make a difference in the world and to challenge stereotypes through love and respect. Through the study of history, we give pupils a sense of belonging in a world where we can encourage them to challenge misconceptions, show empathy, and debate the actions of people that have lived before them. We aim to nurture a love of history through our curriculum as it enables pupils to understand the developments and chronology of Britain and the influence their country has had on societies and cultures across the world. Our pupils will understand how to be a historian, through questioning primary and secondary sources and offering evidence of different perspectives and interpretations. We passionately encourage oral and written debate to allow our pupils to create their own opinions, referring to the context of time, and to step away from a polarized society. Our pupils will gain and understanding of change and continuity across periods of time.

Our pupils’ study social, religious, political and military history, which provides an interesting, exciting and engaging overview of the topics outlined in the national curriculum and GCSE. The study of conflict and change will enable an understanding of how incredibly disruptive history has been, yet the amazing impact on our lives. We give our pupils the chance to travel back in time and piece together the overarching events and people that have made history from the middle ages to the 21st century. We passionately believe that our curriculum allows our pupils to relive history, so they have the chance to visualise and inspire their curiosity to question the choices of the past. We offer enrichment for our pupils, through trips, visits, films and books. Our teaching will not only equip pupils to critically weigh evidence to develop their own perspective and judgement but will also provide them with the communication, written and oral skills needed to succeed in life.

Literacy (including subject vital vocab)

History is a predominately written subject, and therefore literacy is at the forefront of our teaching. Vital skills in history include extended writing, oracy, debate, explanation and argument. To enable our pupils to learn and develop these skills throughout the history learning they must learn and appropriately use tier 2 and 3 vocab. Literacy is also marked at GCSE level, providing extra marks for extended written answers. Literacy counts for 5% of the total grade awarded at GCSE.
